Cookies Policy

This Cookies Policy explains which cookies and similar technologies the Cork Matters website (corkmatters.shop) uses, what they are for and how you can control them. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal data.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. Websites also use similar technologies such as local storage (data kept in your browser) and pixels (small pieces of code that report a visit to a service such as Google or Meta). In this policy, "cookies" covers all of these.

Your choice

When you first visit our website we ask whether you accept cookies. If you are in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, analytics and advertising cookies are only used after you accept them. If you decline, they are not set. In other countries they are used by default, and you can still decline them in the same banner.

Your choice is saved in your browser. You can change it at any time with the "Cookie settings" link in the Customer Services section at the bottom of every page.

Strictly necessary storage

These are needed for the website to work and are always used. They are kept in your browser:

  • Shopping cart ("cartItems", local storage): the products in your cart, so they are still there when you come back.
  • Cookie choice ("cookieConsent", local storage): whether you accepted or declined cookies.
  • Newsletter ("hasSubscribed", local storage): stops the newsletter pop-up from appearing again once you have subscribed.
  • Language change (session storage): a temporary note used while switching the website to another language, deleted straight away.
  • Campaign details ("attr_…", session storage): if you arrived from an advertisement or a link with campaign tags (such as utm_source or gclid), these are kept until you close the browser tab and passed on to checkout, so the order can be linked to the campaign.

Analytics cookies (Google Analytics)

With your consent, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the website is used: which pages are visited, which products are added to the cart and which visits lead to an order. Google Analytics sets the cookies "_ga" and "_ga_…", which last up to 2 years. Google receives information such as the pages you view, your device and browser type and an approximate location derived from your IP address. Google is a separate data controller for this data; see Google's Privacy Policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Advertising cookies (Google Ads and Meta Pixel)

With your consent, we use:

  • Google Ads: measures whether our Google advertisements lead to visits and orders, and lets us show our ads to people who have visited our website. It sets cookies such as "_gcl_au" (up to 90 days). You can manage personalised ads at https://adssettings.google.com.
  • Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram): measures whether our Facebook and Instagram advertisements lead to visits and orders, and lets us show our ads to people who have visited our website. It sets the cookie "_fbp" (up to 90 days). You can manage your ad preferences in your Facebook or Instagram settings.

Checkout (Shopify)

When you press "Buy", you are taken to our secure checkout, which is run by Shopify. Shopify uses its own cookies on the checkout pages to process your order and payment and to prevent fraud. These are covered by Shopify's Privacy Policy at https://www.shopify.com/legal/privacy. If you accepted analytics cookies, the checkout is linked to your visit so that a completed order can be measured.

How to manage cookies

As well as the choice in our banner, you can view and delete cookies and site data in your browser:

  • Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies, or Site settings > View permissions and data stored across sites.
  • Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data.
  • Safari: Settings (or Preferences) > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
  • Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data.

If you block all cookies and site data, the shopping cart will not work. For more information about cookies, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.
